Homelab Rack Planner for 12U to 24U Racks
RackBuilder is a free homelab rack planner for 12U to 24U home server racks. Sketch NAS, switch, patch, UPS, and shelf placeholders for mini PCs by U before you buy a cabinet or rearrange the closet.

Picking a 12U, 15U, 18U, or 24U rack
Count device U first, then choose a height with spare slots. A 12U home server rack fits a lean stack; if it must sit under a desk, check the cabinet outside height against the opening (rail U alone is not the full exterior). 15U and 18U add shelf placeholders for mini PCs or SBC boards. 24U suits denser closet or garage home labs. The designer offers 12U and 24U among common presets; set 15U or 18U with a custom height.
- 12U: NAS, small switch, patch panel, one shelf placeholder, blanks, PDU, UPS.
- 15U / 18U: same core plus extra shelf placeholders or a short 1U server.
- 24U: room for a 2U NAS, server, dual shelf placeholders, and airflow blanks.
For rail math and standard sizes, see server rack U-space best practices.
Typical homelab builds
Most home racks mix storage, network, and power: a NAS, vented shelf placeholders for mini PCs or SBC boards (the catalog ships generic shelves, not mini PC or SBC SKUs), a switch with a patch panel beside it, a PDU strip, and a UPS. Leave blanking panels where air should not bypass the gear. Library adds are blocked when the rack has no free U left for that device height. Guest work survives reload in the browser; signed-in users get cloud sync for saved designs. Each saved design holds one rack.
Example homelab layouts
Open a static example in the designer, then edit. The ?example= param loads once and is stripped so a reload cannot silently overwrite your current design.
12U compact home rack
NAS, 16-port PoE switch, Cat6 patch panel, a shelf placeholder for a mini PC, blanks, PDU, and a 2U UPS.
18U rack with dual shelf placeholders
NAS, dual vented shelf placeholders for mini PCs or SBC boards, switch plus patch panel, blanks, PDU, and UPS.
24U home lab with short server
2U NAS, 1U server, switch, patch panel, shelf placeholders, blanks for airflow, PDU, and UPS near the bottom.
Noise, heat, and power tips for home use
Keep louder UPS fans and spinning disks away from bedrooms when you can. Prefer front-to-back airflow with blanking panels so exhaust does not recirculate. Total nameplate wattage labels yourself before you pick a UPS or PDU; RackBuilder does not calculate BTU or circuit amps, and it does not store chassis weights.
Safety note
These tips are planning notes only. Ask a licensed electrician or engineer before you size circuits, PDUs, UPS runtime, or floor load for a home rack. For a broader checklist, read the rack planning checklist.

Frequently asked questions
Which rack height fits a typical homelab: 12U, 15U, 18U, or 24U?
Start from device U heights, then pick the next size with spare U for growth. A 12U rack suits a NAS, small switch, patch panel, one shelf placeholder, and a UPS; check the cabinet outside height if it must sit under a desk. 15U and 18U add room for more shelf placeholders or a short server. 24U fits denser home builds with blanks for airflow. Use the live designer to try sizes; common presets include 12U and 24U, and custom heights cover 15U and 18U.
What belongs in a typical homelab rack build?
Common stacks mix a NAS, vented shelf placeholders for mini PCs or SBC boards (the catalog has shelves, not mini PC or SBC SKUs), a PoE or access switch with a patch panel, blanking panels, a PDU strip, and a UPS near the bottom. Place heavier UPS gear lower. RackBuilder does not store chassis weights, so compare vendor weight totals to the cabinet max load limit separately.
Can I open example homelab layouts in the designer?
Yes. This page links static 12U, 18U, and 24U example layouts that load into /designer via ?example=. The param is applied once and stripped so a reload cannot silently overwrite your work. You can edit devices afterward. Each saved design holds one rack.
Do I need an account to plan a home server rack?
No. You can start without signup, and guest work survives a reload in the browser. Sign in when you want cloud sync across devices. Free accounts can save up to three rack designs; Pro unlocks unlimited saved designs. Library adds are blocked when the rack has no free U left for that device height.
Does RackBuilder size power, noise, or cooling for a home rack?
No. Tips on this page are planning notes only. RackBuilder does not calculate BTU, circuit amps, or structural load. Total nameplate wattage labels yourself, keep noisy gear away from living spaces when you can, and leave blanking panels for airflow. Ask a licensed electrician or engineer before you size circuits, PDUs, UPS runtime, or floor load.
